Countdown to the Holidays: Celebrate Christmas traditions in Hungary

The details

December 21, 2021
1-2 p.m. ET
Live, on Zoom

What you’ll learn

From a cozy Budapest café to your kitchen, experience the traditions of a Hungarian Christmas. Join Tour Director Bea, who owns and operates a coffee shop in her home city of Budapest, to learn how to make Szaloncukor, a staple Hungarian holiday sweet that doubles as a delicious Christmas tree ornament (we promise that it’s easier to make than it is to pronounce!). During the demonstration, learn more about Bea's favorite Hungarian holiday foods, what locals do during the holiday season, and how to celebrate Christmas like a true Hungarian from home. Then, hear more about the Christmas markets tours we offer to this region.

We also recommend bringing:

Ingredients for Szaloncukor:

-4 oz dried dates, pitted and as soft as possible (If you don’t like dates, prunes will work, too!)
-1/2 cup walnuts
-1/4 cup cashews or pecans
-2 Tbsp coconut oil
-2–3 tsp coconut flakes
-Ground cinnamon
-Whole or ground nutmeg
-The peel of an orange
-1 cup chocolate chips (ideally dark 70%)
