Sail along the Nile River and demystify sites that define 5,000 years of history.

How do you turn a week into forever? By going back—thousands of years back—to Egypt’s mythical sites and etching them into your memories. Guided by an Egyptologist, you’ll take in the Pyramids of Giza before setting sail down the Nile River. You’ll make awe-filled stops at towering, hieroglyph-etched temples in Karnak and Luxor; wander the hidden tombs of the Valley of the Kings; and have the opportunity to soar above it all in a hot-air balloon. To take a closer look at the unique intersection of spiritual traditions in modern Egypt, extend your trip to stay in Cairo.

Cairo extension

Haven’t gotten your fill of Egypt’s history? Tack on two more days in Cairo to spend time among the largest collection of pharaonic antiquities; mingle with locals as you try hearty local dishes; and walk among the mosques, churches, and synagogues that have thrived side-by-side in Old Cairo. (Don’t worry: Your Tour Director will make sure you don’t miss a thing.)

Cairo

Day 9: Guided tour of the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities

Included meal: Breakfast

To kick off your stay in Cairo, start with a visit to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, which houses the famous masks of Tutankhamun, and explore the exhibits alongside your Egyptologist.

Later tonight, use your free time to dine like an Egyptian by adding our optional excursion. Join a local family for a home-hosted dinner and sample the complex flavors that are endemic to Egyptian cuisine like dukkah and fenugreek.

Please note: Travelers will not be able to enter the Mummies Room at the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, as it’s moved to a different exhibition. Additionally, once the Grand Egyptian Museum is open to visitors, the visit to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities will be replaced with free time or a new afternoon excursion to Saqqara and the Bent Pyramid.

Day 10: Sightseeing tour of Old Cairo

Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Set off on a guided tour of Old Cairo’s labyrinthine alleys, ancient churches, and ornate mosques with your Egyptologist, learning about the area’s history as you go.

  • Visit the Cairo Citadel. Built in the 12th century by the mighty sultan Saladin and originally used as a fortress, it remained the seat of the Egyptian government until the 19th century.
  • Stop at the Muhammad Ali Mosque, built in the Ottoman style and known as the Alabaster Mosque for its extensive stone paneling. Its twin minarets make it one of the most striking structures in Cairo’s cityscape.
  • Enter the Hanging Church. Officially known as Saint Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church, this third-century sanctuary is adorned with expertly turned wood carvings, colorful frescoes, and ornate marble columns. Its moniker stems from its position atop the gatehouse of Babylon Fortress, giving the impression that it’s suspended in the air.
  • Step inside the Turkish-style Ben Ezra Synagogue, a place of pilgrimage for North African Jews. It’s believed to have been built on the site where, according to biblical accounts, the baby Moses was found in the Nile River.

Sit down with your fellow travelers for one last included dinner at a local restaurant, served with beer or wine.
