What to know before you go
POPULATION
Australia is home to roughly 26 million residents, but they only occupy about 5% of the country’s vast landscape. Due to its dry climate, most of Australia is considered uninhabitable.
CULTURAL QUICK TAKE
Laid-back and friendly, Australians enjoy the outdoors, sports, and endlessly creative slang. (Shopping for flip-flops for the beach? You’ll need to ask for “thongs” Down Under.) And while you’ll hear English everywhere, there are more than 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages spoken—the country’s Indigenous culture dates back more than 65,000 years.
WHAT TO GO FOR
The contrast between Australia’s untamed nature and cityscapes makes the country feel both far-flung and welcoming. Whether you’re learning about Aboriginal culture or experiencing wildlife up close while snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, Australia doesn’t disappoint when it comes to immersive experiences.
UNIQUE EXPERIENCES ON TOUR
Twirl a glass of new-to-you wine in Melbourne or Tasmania, take a starlit dinner cruise around Sydney Harbour, or watch the penguin parade on Phillip Island—our Australia tours have something to delight foodies, amateur historians, and adventure seekers alike.

Travel tips for Australia tours
If you’re considering booking a trip to Australia, here are a few things you might want to know:
- Read up on the local slang. While Australians still speak English, it’s not the same as it is in the U.S. You’ll notice this as soon as our Australia tours begin!
- If you’ll need internet access, get a hotspot on your phone. It’ll be a lot more reliable (and cheaper) than hotel or public WiFi.
- Cars drive on the left, so look both ways before crossing the street.
- The same applies for sidewalks—so make sure you walk on the left, too!
That depends on how much you want to see and do on your trip to Australia. Our Australia travel packages range from 12-22 days, so there’s truly something for everyone.
First, remember that when it’s winter in North America, it’s summer in Australia, and vice versa. While Australian winters are much milder than they are in the majority of North America, you’ll still want to bring a warm jacket on our Australia tours.
You’ll also want to bring some reef-safe sunscreen. The sun can be much stronger in Australia—even during their winter.
Some of the most popular places to visit include:
- Melbourne, a hip city full of fantastic food
- The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system
- Uluru, a sacred sandstone site in the Outback
- The Sydney Opera house, an iconic site on the water
On our trips to Australia, there’s no shortage of local cuisines to indulge in. Here are the foods you’ll have to try:
- Barbecued “snags,” also known as sausages
- Meat pies, a savory, sweet Australian delicacy
- Vegemite (it’s an acquired taste)
- Tim Tams. Bite off opposite corners and sip your tea with it for what the locals call a Tim Tam Slam!
As you plan your trip to Australia, keep in mind that you will need to purchase an individual visa from the Australian government or the Electronic Travel Authority website. You need a valid passport to apply and it only takes a few days to process.

One of the main benefits of going on a guided tour of Australia is that you’ll always have an expert by your side to help you find the best spots. All of our Australia tour packages feature local guides, so you’ll get an authentic perspective of the country. Plus, when you go to Australia on a group tour, you’ll get to experience the country while making new friends in your group, too.
