What to know before you go
POPULATION
Roughly 22 million people live in the region’s three countries: 10.5 million in Sweden, 6 million in Denmark, and 5.5 million in Norway. Notice anyone missing? Iceland and Finland may be part of the Nordics, but they technically aren’t Scandinavian!
CAPITALS
Stockholm, Sweden, is Scandinavia’s largest city and economic center; Copenhagen, Denmark, is a major cultural hub; and Oslo, Norway, is the region’s oldest capital, founded almost 1,000 years ago.
CULTURAL QUICK TAKE
Move over, Disneyland: Thanks to its high quality of life and strong social safety net, Scandinavia might just be the happiest place on Earth. That, at least, is according to the World Happiness Report, which has ranked Denmark, Norway, and Sweden in the top 10 most content countries each year since 2013.
WHAT TO GO FOR
The fjords on Bergen’s outskirts. The pastel-colored homes of Copenhagen’s Nyhavn district. The wooden buildings of Gothenburg’s Haga neighborhood. The clean silhouettes of the region’s world-famous architectural style. Take your pick!
UNIQUE EXPERIENCES ON TOUR
Sip a chilled drink in a bar hewn from ice, marvel at the halls of the Swedish royal family’s private residence, snap photos of the castle immortalized in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” and more.
