Activity level

Explore Germany’s storybook south in the span of a fairy-tale week.

Munich anchors Bavaria with its landmark parks and beerhouses. Nuremberg holds its Holy Roman heritage and darker recent past up for all to see. Flowering vineyards and charming villages drape the hills of the UNESCO-listed Rhine Valley. And on this tour, you’ll drink it all in. Spend a week exploring these three destinations, with some delightful extras sprinkled in. (Have you ever thought about visiting a hops farm in the Hallertau?) End your trip on a magical note with an included stay at a Rhine Valley castle—and for an extra dash of whimsy, sign up for the Black Forest extension.

Black Forest Region extension

Half-timbered houses, turreted palaces, and mystery behind every tree? It could only be the Black Forest. This extension will whisk you to Freiburg—with a stop at Hohenzollern Castle along the way—before delving into some of the area’s beloved traditions. And we mean more than fairy tales: You’ll watch craftspeople blow glass, artisans tinker with cuckoo clocks, and dig into a decadent slice of Black Forest cake before heading home.

Black Forest Region

Day 9: Black Forest region via Hohenzollern Castle

Included meal: Breakfast

You’ll spend most of your day on the road, trading the quaint villages of the Rhine Valley for the fabled hills of the Black Forest. The scenery stuns—and along the way, you’ll detour into the mountains for an even better view, courtesy of Hohenzollern Castle.

  • Hop aboard a shuttle and snake up Mount Hohenzollern to the majestic castle at its peak. Once there, you’ll have some free time to grab lunch and get your first glimpse of the palace’s grounds.
  • Follow a local guide into the halls of Hohenzollern Castle—an ancestral refuge that rivals Neuschwanstein in grandeur—and marvel at the treasures housed within. Some of our favorites: the Crown of Wilhelm II, made for the last king of Germany, and a letter from George Washington thanking the House of Hohenzollern for their assistance during the American Revolution.

Say goodbye to this architectural masterpiece and return via shuttle to your bus. Soon, you’ll arrive in Freiburg; check into your hotel room and unwind for the rest of the evening.

Day 10: Sightseeing tour of the Black Forest region

Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting

Sitting on the edge of the Black Forest, the university city of Freiburg im Breisgau—Freiburg for short—is something of a hidden gem. Kick off your final full day on tour by heading into the Old Town, or Altstadt, with your Tour Director for some sightseeing.

  • Enter the Munster, Freiburg’s soaring Gothic cathedral. Its 380-foot-tall spire has watched over the Altstadt since the 13th century—even more impressive considering Allied bombers razed swathes of the city during World War II.
  • Spy a number of local icons: the candy-colored facade of the Historisches Kaufhaus, the whimsical Neues Rathaus, and the rebuilt Martinstor. And don’t forget to look down! The Bachle—tiny gutters that supplied Freiburg with fresh water—crisscross the Altstadt like miniature canals.

Afterward, board your bus and drive northeast to the town of Wolfach, where you’ll visit the Dorotheenhutte—the last glassworks in the Black Forest still using traditional methods. As you tour the museum and watch artisans create pieces by hand, you’ll learn about the region’s longstanding glassblowing tradition. (You might even buy some glassware to take home as a souvenir.)

You’ll then make your way to Triberg, a village nestled among the Black Forest, for a three-part tour.

  • Indulge in a tasting of Black Forest cake—layers of chocolate sponge and whipped cream topped with cherries—before breaking for free time for lunch.
  • Spot the world’s largest cuckoo clock, recognized by the Guinness World Records since 1997. Will you be there when it chimes?
  • Tour a cuckoo clock factory and gain a deeper appreciation of the intricacy in each of these famous timepieces.
