Itinerary

Overnight flight1 night
Day 1: Travel day
Board your overnight flight to Geneva today.
Lake Geneva Region2 nights
Day 2: Arrival in Geneva & transfer to hotel
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to Switzerland! After touching down, make your way to the Lake Geneva region and check into your hotel. Tonight, you’ll get to know your Tour Director and groupmates during a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of Lausanne
Included meal: Breakfast
Running up into the hills from the shores of Lake Geneva, Lausanne is a thing of beauty—a collection of elegant parks, medieval streets, and museum after museum. This morning, you’ll meet up with a local guide for a tour of the Olympic Capital (and discover the source of its unique nickname).
- Drive along Lake Geneva past the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, a modern structure on the edge of the Parc Louis Bourget.
- Follow your guide on foot through the Old Town, glimpsing the Gothic facade of Lausanne Cathedral and the stone walls of the Old Bishop’s Palace.
- Stand in the heart of Saint-Francois Square and gaze up at its namesake church, built in the Gothic style some eight centuries ago.
- Enter the Olympic Museum for a self-guided tour, and take your time browsing the world’s largest collection of Olympic memorabilia before breaking for lunch.
Wondering what’s growing in the vineyards that ring Lausanne? Add our optional excursion to your itinerary to indulge in a tasting of local wines, paired with a visit to the famed Chateau de Chillon. If you’d rather use your free afternoon to explore on your own, consider heading to the Plage de Vidy and go for a brisk swim in Lake Geneva’s Alpine waters.
Interlaken Region1 night
Day 4: Interlaken region via Lauterbrunnen & Schilthorn cable car
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
This morning, begin your journey into Switzerland’s German-speaking heartland. You’ll end the day near Interlaken—but first, make a pitstop in the quintessential Alpine village of Lauterbrunnen for a tour.
- Follow your Tour Director past Lauterbrunnen’s chalet-style houses, framed by soaring peaks and misty waterfalls, before breaking for lunch.
- Head to the Schilthornbahn—a three-part aerial lift that claims the steepest cable car segment in the world—and climb aboard for a ride to its namesake’s peak.
- Marvel at the view from a 360-degree observation deck. From your perch 9,740 feet above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, you’ll be able to spot the region’s three most famous mountains: Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau.
Make your way back down Schilthorn, return to your bus, and finish the drive to your hotel in the Interlaken region. After freshening up, reconvene with your fellow travelers for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Swiss Alps2 nights
Day 5: Swiss Alps via alphorn factory
Included meal: Breakfast
Leave Interlaken behind and journey deeper into the Swiss Alps. Your first stop: the Bernatone Alphornbau. Hidden away in the town of Habkern, this humble factory specializes in alphorns—the curved wind instruments that have sounded across the region for centuries, helping shepherds signal one another from miles away. Take a guided tour of the property, learning about the craftsmanship that goes into each handmade instrument, before hitting the road again.
Later, you’ll pull into your hotel in Engelberg, a resort village tucked away in the mountains of the Lucerne region. Take some time to freshen up before spending the rest of the day at your leisure. If time permits, sign up for a tour of Engelberg Abbey: This Benedictine monastery dates to the 12th century and has played a key role in the valley’s history.
Day 6: Sightseeing tour of Lucerne
Included meal: Breakfast
Riding the world’s first rotating cable car? Add this morning’s optional outing to your itinerary, and you’ll do just that—with a walk through Titlis’ glacier caves for good measure.
Whether you ventured into the mountains or stayed in the comfort of your hotel, you’ll rejoin your groupmates in the afternoon. Together, you’ll set out into lakeside Lucerne for a guided sightseeing tour and enjoy a taste of Alpine life—complete with clear views of Pilatus, Rigi, and the rugged ridges of other neighboring mountains.
- View the Lion Monument, a tribute to the Swiss Guards who sacrificed their lives in Paris during the French Revolution.
- Pass the hand-painted facades that line the cobbled streets of the Old Town—the traditional core of the city that dates to medieval times.
- Cross the famous wooden Kapellbrucke (say it “ka-PELL-broo-kuh”), a 14th-century covered bridge that spans the Reuss River, and view the adjacent Water Tower. Octagonal in shape and made of stone—with a complicated past as a sentinel’s post, state treasury, and prison—it predates the Kapellbrucke by roughly 100 years.
- See the Jesuit Church, the first large Baroque building of its kind to be built north of the Alps in Switzerland.
Lugano2 nights
Day 7: Lugano via Lake Maggiore region
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
From the Lucerne region, chart a course for Ticino—Switzerland’s southernmost canton, or state, and the home of the country’s Italian-speaking population. En route, stop in a grotto for an included lunch. Born from the caves where locals would store food and drink, these shaded, secluded taverns are a staple of the region’s culinary heritage. If you’re craving a true taste of Ticinese cooking, it doesn’t get more authentic than this.
Appetite satisfied, continue to Ascona for a bit of free time. The town hugs Lake Maggiore, and its waterfront promenade features cafe after cafe. Consider popping into one for an Italian-style espresso—and savoring it slowly, the Mediterranean way—before finishing your journey to Lugano.
Day 8: Free day in Lugano & farewell dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
If yesterday’s visit to Ascona piqued your interest, be sure to add today’s optional excursion to your itinerary. Our focus: the villages surrounding Lake Lugano, where Alpine and Mediterranean influences meld to form a culture you’ll only find in Ticino. Otherwise, hang back and explore Lugano at your leisure. For a deeper look at the region’s beauty, head to Parco Ciani, where you can roam manicured gardens at your leisure or visit the Cantonal Museum of Natural History.
Whatever your choice, come together as a group one final time this evening for a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.
Flight Home
Day 9: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer across the Italian border to Milan for your flight home. Alternatively, tack the extension onto your tour to hitch a ride on the Bernina Express and spend the next few days exploring St. Moritz and Zurich.
St. Moritz & Zurich extension
Just when you thought Switzerland couldn’t get more beautiful, the Bernina Express beckons you aboard. You’ll kick off this extension with a train ride unlike any other, rolling through UNESCO-listed landscapes to elegant St. Moritz. After a stay in this luxe resort town, wrap up your trip with a couple of nights in Zurich—the country’s urban heart—and get a feel for life in this cultural hub.
St. Moritz1 night
Day 9: Bernina Express train ride to St. Moritz
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Leave Lugano behind and head for Tirano, a town of under 10,000 people in the northern Italian region of Lombardy. You’ll have some time to explore, and if you decide to stop for coffee, try a crema caffe. Decadently creamy, this whipped treat offsets the heat of summer days and has the same caffeine kick as a shot of espresso.
After stretching your legs, reunite with your group at Tirano’s train station and board the Bernina Express for an epic, 2.5-hour trip up the UNESCO-recognized Rhaetian Railway.
- Cross the idyllic Val Poschiavo, winding past the towns and trees that dot the valley.
- Chug up and through the Bernina Pass, glimpsing glacial lakes and grazing cows as you go.
At the end of the line, disembark in St. Moritz, transfer to your hotel, and join your groupmates for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Please note: You’ll need to present your passport when crossing from Italy to Switzerland. Also, the Bernina Express operates seasonally, from mid-May through mid-October. If it isn’t running during your tour, you’ll instead take a different local train to St. Moritz.
Zurich2 nights
Day 10: Transfer to Zurich & sightseeing tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Later today, you’ll arrive in Zurich—but first, you have business in the town of Kilchberg, home of the Lindt chocolate factory. You’ll visit the beloved confectioner’s Home of Chocolate for a tasting of their famous truffles before hitting the road once more. (Don’t forget to pick up some treats at the Lindt shop!)
With the afternoon soon in the sky, pull into Zurich. Split by the Limmat River and flanked by its namesake lake, Switzerland’s largest city offers plenty; get an introduction with some Tour Director-led sightseeing.
- Walk through the Altstadt, or Old Town. Until 1893, this was Zurich—the modern metropolis you see today expanded from this district in the following years.
- Pass St. Peter’s (the oldest parish church in Zurich) and the Rathaus, or town hall. The latter exhibits a mix of Baroque and Renaissance elements not found anywhere else.
Day 11: Free day in Zurich
Included meal: Breakfast
Europe’s most powerful waterfall lies just north of Zurich—and if you add our optional excursion to your itinerary, you’ll get to see it, along with the medieval core of Schaffhausen for good measure. If you’d rather stay in Zurich, you can fill your free day museum-hopping: The city lays claim to more than 60 permanent exhibitions, including the Swiss National Museum.
Whatever you choose, you’ll come together with your fellow travelers in the evening for a farewell drink.
Flight Home
Day 12: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
