Let Austria add warmth and wonder to your holiday season, courtesy of its Christmas markets.

When local artisans start setting out their stalls and Christmas lights begin flickering to life, Austria’s musical atmosphere takes a different tune. On this special tour, you’ll get swept up in the revelry from Vienna to Salzburg, diving into holiday markets at every stop. With your Tour Director by your side, you’ll indulge in seasonal traditions (freshly baked cookies, anyone?) and evergreen hits (like Mondsee’s Basilica of St. Michael, featured in “The Sound of Music”). And to truly see the country at its snowy best, join us on the extension to Innsbruck—the crown jewel of the Austrian Alps.

Vienna

Day 2: Arrival in Vienna

Included meal: Welcome dinner

Welcome to Austria! Transfer to your hotel and get settled in. Tonight, get to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers during a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.

Innsbruck extension

Snow-dusted mountains on all sides. A medieval Old Town at its core. The quintessential Alpine city, Innsbruck looks as if it were plucked from a Christmas card, and on this extension, you’ll get to the heart of this picture-perfect place. Spend two days exploring its Renaissance churches, Habsburg palaces, and holiday markets—and maybe even join us on an adventure into the Alps.

Innsbruck

Day 9: Transfer to Innsbruck, sightseeing tour & Christmas markets

Included meal: Breakfast

Long a destination for winter thrillseekers, Innsbruck’s cultural cachet matches its Olympic pedigree. After arriving from Salzburg, link up with a local guide for a tour of the Tyrolean capital—with a festive surprise as the finale—before breaking for the evening.

  • Venture into the Old Town, decked in holiday lights and decorations, for a glimpse of two local legends: the Goldenes Dachl (the Golden Roof, covered in over 2,600 gilded copper tiles) and the Stadtturm (the City Tower, a 150-foot Gothic sentry post).
  • Pass the Hofburg and walk its cobblestoned courtyard. Prized for its architectural design, this former Habsburg palace is one of the most important cultural sites in all of Austria.
  • Enter the Baroque Cathedral of St. James, an 18th-century structure that houses “Maria Hilf” (“Mary of Succor”), one of the most venerated works of Marian art in the Christian world.
  • Get into the Christmas spirit at one of Innsbruck’s holiday markets. Sip a cup of steaming gluhwein, snack on kiachln (rounds of deep-fried yeast dough filled with jams and dusted with powdered sugar), and amble from stall to stall.

Day 10: Free day in Innsbruck

Included meal: Breakfast

The magnificent peaks of the Nordkette are your constant companions in Innsbruck—and if you’d like to experience their beauty up close, be sure to add today’s optional outing to your itinerary. Otherwise, hang back in town and explore at your leisure. The Bergisel Ski Jump—site of two Olympic championships and other international competitions—stands south of the Old Town; climbing to its Zaha Hadid-designed observation deck reveals a sweeping view of Innsbruck’s neighboring mountains. (You might even spot another Christmas market to visit!)

Whatever you choose, you’ll reconvene with your group one last time in the evening for a farewell drink and raise a toast to a successful trip.
