Unpack this nation’s sparkling-green reputation, one nature preserve at a time.

Misty cloud forests. Caribbean (and Pacific) beaches. Roughly 5% of the world’s biodiversity. When it comes to natural attractions, tiny Costa Rica packs a mighty punch—where else can you cruise down a rainforest canal, soak in volcanic hot springs, and delight in just-picked pineapple on the same trip? From beloved preserves like Tortuguero and Arenal to independent wildlife sanctuaries, you’ll discover a country fully in tune with its surroundings. The sunny shores of Manuel Antonio National Park highlight that even further, and you can sink into those welcoming sands on this trip’s extension.

Itinerary

San José

Day 1: Arrival in San José

Welcome to Costa Rica! After touching down in San José, make the short transfer to your hotel. You’ll touch down later in the day, so use the rest of your day to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat, and look forward to the rest of your journey.

Tortuguero

Day 2: Transfer to Tortuguero

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Welcome dinner

Board your bus and drive through Braulio Carrillo National Park, winding through cloud forests and the peaks of the Cordillera Central mountain range en route to Tortuguero. But before you arrive, you’ll trade your coach for a boat—the only way to reach this national park is by air or water!

Cruise along the Tortuguero River, keeping your eyes peeled for caimans, common basilisks, and more jungle wildlife. Soon, you’ll dock at your eco-lodge—a cozy, quiet property in the heart of the rainforest—where you’ll check in and share lunch with your group. You’ll have the rest of the day to relax before reconvening for an included welcome dinner, served with beer or rum punch.

After, return to your room for the evening—or, if it’s nesting season, talk to your Tour Director to book an optional nighttime excursion and walk along the beach to spot green sea turtles. (Tortuguero’s home to one of the world’s largest nesting populations.)

Please note: The night beach walk is available from July to September, during nesting season. To join, book your spot directly with your Tour Director.

Manuel Antonio & San José extension

Pura vida and pure beauty go hand in hand, and nowhere is that more apparent than Manuel Antonio National Park. This tour’s extension drops you right in the thick of the park’s mesmerizing surroundings, showcasing turquoise waters and forest greens before whisking you back to San José by way of Tarcoles. Simply put, it has the lot.

Manuel Antonio

Day 9: Manuel Antonio National Park

Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Small but stunning, Manuel Antonio National Park packs breathtaking beaches, scenic hiking trails, and verdant rainforests into just more than 2.5 square miles. Follow your Tour Director for some guided sightseeing and let the preserve wow you.

  • Keep an eye out for some of the 109 mammal species and 270 bird species that call the park home, including howler monkeys and yellow-throated toucans.
  • Walk to the top of rocky Cathedral Point to view the lush park from across a small bay.
  • Visit Escondido Beach, where a blowhole sends plumes of seawater skyward during high tide.
  • Take in the view at Punta Serrucho—“Saw Point” in English—and trace the jagged outline of its cliffs and sea caves.
  • Be sure to bring your bathing suit—after your walking tour, you’ll have time to go for a dip in the Pacific!

Return to your hotel and freshen up, then venture to a local restaurant for an included dinner, served with beer or rum punch.

Day 10: Free day in Manuel Antonio

Included meal: Breakfast

Today, the unspoiled miles of Manuel Antonio are yours to explore. Will you walk a nature trail, looking to spot more native wildlife? Maybe lounge on a white-sand beach? You could even snorkel among a kaleidoscope of corals and tropical fish if you add our optional catamaran cruise to your itinerary.

San José

Day 11: Tárcoles River cruise & transfer to San José

Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner

Make the trip to San José one more time, stopping in Tarcoles en route. This sleepy town is famous for the American crocodiles that swim in its eponymous river. (In fact, it has one of the highest concentrations in the world, at about 25 per square kilometer.) Board a boat for a guided cruise and look out for those resident crocs, as well as iguanas, egrets, and more.

Once you dock, hop back on your bus and finish driving to San José. Tonight, raise a glass to your groupmates at a farewell dinner, served with beer or rum punch, before preparing to head home.

Flight Home

Day 12: Departure

Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)

Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
