Itinerary

San Juan2 nights
Day 1: Arrival in San Juan
Welcome to Puerto Rico! After touching down in San Juan, the island’s largest city and capital, transfer to your hotel and get settled. You’ll meet the rest of your group—and get to know the UNESCO-recognized landmarks of Old San Juan—tomorrow.
Day 2: Sightseeing tour of San Juan
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner
An island within an island, Old San Juan marks the oldest European settlement in Puerto Rico and boasts old-world monuments to match. Follow your Tour Director this morning for a walking tour of its blue-cobbled streets and flash back to San Juan’s past as a vital Spanish port.
- Dig into Puerto Rican history at Plaza Colon—a public square marking where San Juan’s eastern walls once stood—before entering San Cristobal Castle. The largest Spanish fortification in the New World, it took close to 150 years to build and protected the city against English, Dutch, and American assaults over the centuries.
- Stroll past the buildings and boutiques lining Calle de la Fortaleza, and don’t forget to look up: Depending on the time of year, you might spot butterflies, lights, or umbrellas strung up above the street.
- Stop outside the 16th-century La Fortaleza. Once a fortress, it was remodeled in the Neoclassical style in the 1840s and still functions as the official residence of the governor of Puerto Rico.
- Enter the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a hulking hilltop stronghold that has guarded the entrance to San Juan Bay for more than 400 years, and hear the tales of its harrowing battles.
Interested in adding a splash of color (and a shot or two of rum) to your legend-loaded day? Tack our optional excursion onto your itinerary to visit the mural-bedecked neighborhood of Santurce before ending the afternoon at a local distillery. Otherwise, explore San Juan at your leisure before reuniting with your groupmates for a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.
Ponce2 nights
Day 3: Ponce via Manati farm visit & evening bioluminescent bay cruise
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Lunch
Trade the Atlantic for the Caribbean today and hit the road for Ponce—but before arriving in Puerto Rico’s second city, detour to the northern town of Manati for a tour of and lunch at a sustainable farm.
- Learn about the island’s burgeoning farm-to-table movement as a farmer takes you through the fields, introducing you to some of their friendly residents—goats, rabbits, horses, and more.
- Nibble on fresh microgreens, edible flowers, and homemade goat cheese before sitting down to an included lunch prepared with the farm’s bounty.
Following your meal, return to your bus and finish driving to the coastal city of Ponce. After a restful afternoon, travel as a group back to La Parguera. Famous for its bioluminescence, the bay puts on an ethereal light show each evening, tinging the surface and shore with a delicate blue glow. Drink in the sight during a cruise before going to a nearby restaurant for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.
Please note: Bioluminescence is caused by light-producing bacteria. The intensity of the phenomenon depends on several things, including weather and other environmental factors. On some departures, the visit to the bioluminescent bay may take place during the evening of day 3.
Day 4: Free day in Ponce & cooking demonstration
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
You’ll head to La Parguera this evening—but if those tropical waters are too tantalizing to ignore, get a head start by joining us on this morning’s optional outing. Add it to your itinerary, and you’ll dive into the vibrant surroundings of a coral reef and snorkel to your heart’s content. If you’d prefer to ease into your day, find a seat at a local cafe: Ponce’s coffee ranks as some of the best in Puerto Rico.
However you choose to spend the day, you'll come back together this evening for an unforgettable included experience: a hands-on cooking demonstration followed by dinner. Don your apron and gloves you're walked through through the art of crafting Puerto Rican staples — from pillowy mofongo and crispy plantain chips to golden tostones and spiders — before sitting down to savor the very dishes you helped bring to life, served with beer or wine.
Rio Grande Coast2 nights
Day 5: Transfer to the Rio Grande coast
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Bid Ponce farewell and hit the road once more, cutting back across Puerto Rico to the Rio Grande coast. En route, pause at a restaurant for an included farm-to-table lunch and relish more of the island’s cuisine, prepared with fresh seasonal ingredients.
Belly full, continue your journey northeast; as the landscape shifts to lush tropical rainforest, you’ll know you’re close to your final destination. Once you pull into your beachside resort and get settled, you’ll have the evening to yourself—the perfect excuse to dig your toes into the golden sands of the Rio Grande coast (or indulge in the varied amenities the hotel offers).
Day 6: Yunque National Forest & farewell dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Draped over 43 square miles of the Sierra de Luquillo mountains, El Yunque constitutes the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Its thick jungles shelter a number of endemic species—and if you’re lucky, you might spot some during today’s visit.
- Begin at El Portal, the forest’s visitor center, to learn about El Yunque’s biodiversity. Four distinct types of vegetation compose the jungle, and each supports a unique mix of flora and fauna—including the endangered Puerto Rican parrot and the beloved coqui.
- Drive to Yokahu Tower. Named after the chief deity of the indigenous Taino people, this observation point shoots nearly 70 feet above the forest floor. Should you choose, climb the tower for unfettered views over El Yunque, all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
- Pause at La Coca Falls—a gentle cascade that dribbles down a smoothed rock face—for photos before taking off on an easy hike down the Angelito Trail. Keep your camera on you: You’ll get close-up looks at some of El Yunque’s wildlife as you trek down to a serene natural pool.
Finally, return to your hotel on the Rio Grande coast and spend the afternoon relaxing. Tonight, you’ll celebrate your tour with your groupmates at a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.
Please note: To hike the Angelito Trail, you should feel comfortable walking for 20 minutes and climbing stairs. Additionally, the path closes when inclement weather affects the area; we can’t guarantee that it’ll be open.
Flight Home
Day 7: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the San Juan airport for your flight home. Alternatively, extend your trip for some extra time on the Rio Grande coast. (A sweet treat’s in store if you do!)
Rio Grande Coast extension
The main tour ended a stone’s throw from some of the best beaches in the Caribbean—and on this extension, you’ll have even more time to enjoy them. In between restful stretches at a seafront resort on the Rio Grande coast, you’ll sample indulgent chocolates on an El Yunque cacao farm and fill your days with whatever activities you see fit. (And yes, we think catching rays on golden sands counts!)
Rio Grande Coast2 nights
Day 7: Cacao farm tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
This morning, head back into the tropical wilds of El Yunque—but instead of the rainforest itself, you’ll marvel at another of Puerto Rico’s natural treasures. Chocolate has a long, rich history on the island, and after meeting with a local guide, you’ll bite into part of it during a tour of a cacao farm.
- Walk the property, learning how farmers cultivate cacao using sustainable methods and what it takes to transform the tree’s tangy fruit into different kinds of chocolate.
- Sample a selection of single-estate chocolates: bars ranging from 55% to 75% cocoa, as well as white chocolate infused with cacao nibs and Puerto Rican coffee.
Following your tour, return to your hotel on the Rio Grande coast and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 8: Free day on the Rio Grande coast
Included meal: Breakfast
What better way to wind down your tour than with a full day by the beach? Whether you lay out on the sand, go for a dip in the Atlantic, take advantage of your hotel’s amenities, or explore nearby towns to seek out your Tour Director’s recommendations, today’s all about relaxation.
However you spend your time, you’ll come together with your groupmates this evening for a farewell drink. Clink glasses, toast to your trip, then return to your room and prepare for tomorrow’s journey home.
Flight Home
Day 9: Departure
