Itinerary

Portland, Oregon2 nights
Day 1: Arrival in Portland
Welcome to Oregon! After arriving in Portland, make your way to your hotel to get settled in.
Day 2: Sightseeing tour of Portland
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner
Portland has a personality all its own—equal parts rugged and refined, creative and grounded. This morning, join your local guide on a driving and walking tour that will pull back the curtain on the city’s most iconic landmarks and hidden character.
- Cruise through the heart of Downtown Portland, taking in the buzz of Pioneer Courthouse Square (a public space the size of a city block that’s affectionately known as Portland’s living room) and a scenic stretch of the Willamette River waterfront before ascending into the lush West Hills.
- Step into the International Rose Test Garden, a beloved Portland institution established in 1917 and home to more than 10,000 rose bushes spanning 650 varieties. With Mount Hood as a backdrop, it’s a feast for the eyes—and the nose.
- Wander the grounds of the Portland Japanese Garden, widely regarded as the most authentic Japanese garden outside of Japan. It’s serene, meticulously tended, and utterly transportive.
- Stop at the Pittock Mansion viewpoint in the West Hills for panoramic views of the city skyline; on a clear day, Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens make a dramatic appearance on the horizon.
- End your tour in the Pearl District, where converted warehouses and sun-filled art galleries give way to Powell’s City of Books, the world’s largest independent bookstore and a Portland landmark in its own right.
Your afternoon is yours to explore at your own pace. If the morning’s natural beauty has you hungry for more, consider adding our optional excursion to the Columbia River Gorge and Multnomah Falls, where the Pacific Northwest’s wild, wind-whipped grandeur is on full display. If you’d rather linger in the city, perhaps continue enjoying the Pearl District’s galleries, boutiques, and cafe terraces.
As evening falls, raise a glass with your fellow travelers at a welcome dinner featuring the best of the Pacific Northwest—paired with your choice of locally crafted beer or a pour from the celebrated Willamette Valley wine country.
Seattle, Washington3 nights
Day 3: Amtrak Cascades train ride to Seattle
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Board the Amtrak Cascades train at Portland Union Station and settle in next to the train’s large, panoramic windows as the Pacific Northwest unfolds before you. The route traces the mighty Columbia River north into Washington State, rolling through Centralia and Olympia before hugging the southern shores of Puget Sound, where the snow-dusted peaks of the Olympic Mountains shimmer across the water on a clear day. Grab a bite from the cafe car as the miles roll by, and arrive into Seattle’s storied King Street Station feeling refreshed and ready to explore.
From there, head straight to Pike Place Market, which opened in 1907 and is still as lively and spirited as ever. Watch the fishmongers toss fresh fish through the air, duck into the original Starbucks for a pick-me-up, and head down Post Alley to see the legendary Gum Wall, a quirky work of art made from used chewing gum that’s accumulated since the 1990s. As evening settles over the city, gather with your fellow travelers for dinner paired with your choice of beer or wine.
Please note: When booking your tour, you can choose to upgrade your class of service from coach to business aboard the Amtrak Cascades. On the train, larger luggage is checked similarly to an airline. Each passenger may check their bag free of charge.
Day 4: Sightseeing tour of Seattle
Included meal: Breakfast
This morning, join your local guide for a driving and walking tour of the city’s most storied streets and iconic landmarks, revealing rugged history and bold, modern energy.
- Begin with a panoramic drive through Pioneer Square, Seattle’s oldest neighborhood, where grand Romanesque revival architecture—rebuilt from the ashes of the Great Seattle Fire of 1889—lines the streets with a quiet, time-worn dignity.
- Wind through the vibrant Chinatown-International District, a teeming, flavor-packed pocket of the city rich with cultural heritage and some of Seattle’s most beloved eateries and markets.
- Cruise along the waterfront, where ferries cut across the steel-gray waters of Elliott Bay and the snowcapped silhouette of Mount Rainier looms on the horizon on a clear day.
The rest of the day is yours to spend as you please, whether that means returning to a neighborhood that caught your eye this morning, browsing the boutiques of Capitol Hill, or simply finding a waterfront perch and watching the ferries come and go.
If you’re looking to cap the day with something truly memorable, add our optional excursion to the Seattle Space Needle. Ride to the top and take in sweeping, 360-degree views of the Seattle skyline, Puget Sound, and the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges, then head to a local restaurant for dinner. It’s a spectacular send-off to a day well spent in the Emerald City.
Day 5: Mount Rainier National Park
Included meal: Breakfast
No Pacific Northwest journey would be complete without a day spent in the shadow of Mount Rainier—an active volcano that rises 14,410 feet above sea level and holds the title of the most glaciated peak in the contiguous U.S. Today, that’s exactly where you’ll find yourself as you depart Seattle and pass through the Nisqually Entrance into one of America’s most breathtaking national parks. Your first stop is Longmire, where you’ll stretch your legs on the Trail of Shadows—an easy, flat 0.7-mile loop through a hushed forest, taking roughly 20 to 30 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace. From there, continue deeper into the park and past Christine Falls before pulling over at the thundering Narada Falls viewpoint to take in the scenery. Higher up, the Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center and Paradise Inn await, with free time for lunch and the chance to wander the Myrtle Falls Trail. Before heading back to Seattle, linger at mirror-still Reflection Lake, where Mount Rainier’s snow-draped silhouette doubles itself on the water’s surface.
Please note: Weather and road conditions in Mount Rainier National Park are unpredictable, so while all stops are planned, they are not guaranteed.
Vancouver, British Columbia2 nights
Day 6: Amtrak Cascades train ride to Vancouver, Canada
Included meal: Breakfast
Departing from Seattle’s King Street Station, today’s Amtrak Cascades journey will take you across the border into Canada and follow what’s widely regarded as one of the most scenic train rides in North America. One look out the window will tell—or, rather, show—you exactly why. Settle into your business class seat and let the Pacific Northwest put on a show.
- Glide north along the shimmering shores of Puget Sound, where sweeping views stretch out beyond the glass as the train passes through the waterfront communities of Edmonds, Mukilteo, and Everett.
- Continue along the celebrated Chuckanut Drive corridor and Bellingham Bay, where the rugged coastline gives way to glimpses of the San Juan Islands scattered across the offshore waters like a handful of emerald stepping stones.
- Join you Tour Director for an orientation of Gastown, Vancouver’s oldest and most atmospheric neighborhood, where cobblestone streets and Victorian-era brick buildings set a wonderful tone for the days ahead.
- Wrap up the walk with free time for lunch—the perfect opportunity to duck into one of Gastown’s many inviting eateries and get your first taste of Vancouver’s remarkable, internationally influenced food scene.
Your evening is yours to explore freely, and Vancouver after dark is a city that rewards the wanderer. Discover the flavors and traditions of Vancouver’s historic Chinatown with an optional hands-on dumpling-making class. Under the guidance of a local expert, you’ll master the art of folding and cooking dumplings before sitting down to enjoy the fruits of your labor in a delicious meal.
Please note: Travelers must carry a valid passport for the Canadian border crossing. Customs is processed on arrival at Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station.
Day 7: Sightseeing tour of Vancouver & Stanley Park
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Vancouver has layers, and today, a local guide will help you peel them back one by one, from the city’s grand civic landmarks to the ancient stories woven into its oldest green spaces.
- Drive through the heart of Downtown Vancouver, passing the striking Vancouver Public Library, whose bold, circular facade draws a deliberate nod to the grand Colosseum of Rome—a surprisingly fitting landmark in this thoroughly modern city.
- Continue through the atmospheric streets of Gastown before sweeping past Canada Place—the cruise terminal and convention center whose distinctive roof resembles ships’ sails—and the gleaming Vancouver waterfront, where floatplanes skim the harbor and the North Shore Mountains rise beyond the Burrard Inlet.
- Arrive at Stanley Park, one of North America’s great urban green spaces, where towering old-growth cedars and firs frame the seawall and the city skyline peeks through the canopy.
- Meet a local First Nations guide for an intimate and deeply moving exploration of the park’s Indigenous history. Through oral tradition and personal perspective, your guide will share the stories of their community’s encounters with explorers, traders, and settlers, as well as the living, breathing culture that thrives in these communities today.
Afterward, make your way to Granville Island for free time to wander at your own pace. You might spend it browsing the bustling public market, popping into artists’ studios, or finding a waterfront spot to soak up the last of the afternoon light.
Then, celebrate your trip with your group at a farewell dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.
Flight Home
Day 8: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home, or extend your adventure with a stay in Victoria—British Columbia’s picturesque island capital—where flower-lined inner harbors and grand Edwardian architecture make for a graceful final chapter to your Pacific Northwest journey.
Victoria extension
Victoria earns its place on this itinerary, and then some. Getting there is half the fun: You’ll board a ferry in Vancouver, cruise past the cliff-flanked Gulf Islands—with bald eagles overhead, and, if you're lucky, orcas breaking the surface below—and arrive in one of the Pacific Northwest's most quietly charming capitals. Once there, lose yourself among the five distinct gardens of Butchart, wander the charming Inner Harbour, and experience the city’s afternoon tea tradition at the grand Fairmont Empress.
Victoria2 nights
Day 8: Ferry to Vancouver Island, sightseeing tour of Victoria & Butchart Gardens
Included meal: Breakfast
Your journey to Vancouver Island begins on the water—and what a way to arrive. Board a ferry for a scenic crossing of the Strait of Georgia. Keep your eyes on the water and the sky; this stretch of the Pacific Northwest teems with wildlife at every turn.
- Wind through the Southern Gulf Islands and the narrow, cliff-flanked passage of Active Pass, threading between Galiano and Mayne Islands as the ferry navigates one of the coast’s most dramatic waterways.
- Watch for bald eagles flying overhead, harbor seals lounging on rocky outcrops, and sea lions cutting through the chop.
- Arrive on Vancouver Island and meet your local guide for a panoramic drive through Victoria’s most beautiful neighborhoods, beginning with the sweeping lawns and gardens of Beacon Hill Park—200 acres of green space that also marks Mile 0 of the Trans-Canada Highway.
- Wind through the historic James Bay residential district—where pastel-painted Victorian homes line quiet streets—before continuing along the Scenic Marine Drive past Oak Bay and Cadboro Bay, with the snow-dusted Olympic Mountains rising across the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
- Continue north to Butchart Gardens, a National Historic Site of Canada and one of the world’s most celebrated display gardens. Created from the vision of Jennie Butchart on her family’s 55-acre estate, the gardens, set in a former quarry, are a jaw-dropping testament to what imagination and determination can grow.
- Lose yourself among the gardens’ five distinct spaces: the iconic Sunken Garden; the Rose Garden, with more than 280 varieties in bloom; the serene Japanese Garden; the elegant Italian Garden; and the sun-warmed Mediterranean Garden. They’re all part of a living tapestry of more than 900 plant varieties in continuous bloom from March through October.
Day 9: Free day in Victoria
Included meal: Breakfast
For a truly unforgettable finale, add our optional wildlife cruise to the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve, one of Canada’s most significant marine protected areas, where Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and seabird colonies thrive among rocky islets and the surrounding waters offer a thrilling chance to spot orcas and humpback whales.
Prefer to spend your last day at your own pace? Stroll the flower-lined Inner Harbour, browse the boutiques of Government Street, or experience afternoon tea at the storied Fairmont Empress. However you choose to spend it, it’s a fitting farewell to an unforgettable journey through the Pacific Northwest.
This evening, join your group for a farewell drink and raise a toast to your train journey.

Physical Activity Level
This is a moderate physical activity-level tour. You can expect casual walks and plenty of time to explore throughout the course of the tour.
Tour Pacing
This is a briskly paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:
- Most days full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
- Most transportation by motor coach, some by train (and ferry on the tour extension)
- Daily drive time varies and can be lengthy
Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements
- Travelers should be prepared to walk two miles per day on surfaces including city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
- Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
- Please note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
Climate Considerations
- In spring (April-May), expect cool, crisp temperatures ranging from the low 40s F to the mid-60s F across Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver. Rain is a reliable companion throughout the region, so a waterproof layer is always a smart addition to your daypack—and at Mount Rainier, snow at higher elevations is common well into May.
- Summer (June-August) brings the Pacific Northwest’s finest weather, with warm, comfortable temperatures climbing into the upper 60s F to the mid-70s F across the cities. Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands enjoy some of the sunniest conditions in the region, while Mount Rainier’s higher elevations run noticeably cooler and can turn quickly—pack accordingly.
- September and October usher in crisp, golden days with temperatures in the mid-40s F to the low 70s F, along with the first bursts of fall color across the region’s forests and parks. Rain becomes more frequent as autumn deepens, but the crowds thin out and the landscapes take on a moody, atmospheric beauty all their own.

Transportation by Train
Your journey through the Pacific Northwest includes two rides aboard the Amtrak Cascades—from Portland to Seattle, and onward from Seattle to Vancouver, BC. Running along one of North America’s most scenic rail corridors, the Cascades threads past the glittering waters of Puget Sound, the rugged peaks of the Cascade Range, and the lush, rain-softened landscapes of Washington state. The onboard Bistro Car serves fresh, regionally sourced food and drink—think Pacific Northwest microbrews, locally roasted coffee, and wine from the region’s celebrated vineyards.
Coach Class is included as part of your tour package, but you can choose to upgrade to Business Class for an additional cost.
For this tour, you’ll choose between two service levels:
- Coach class: Settle into a wide, reclining seat with ample legroom, no middle seat, and at-seat trays, reading lights, and electric outlets. Your seat is reserved in advance, so all that’s left to do is sit back and watch the Pacific Northwest roll by—with easy access to the Bistro Car throughout the journey.
- Business class: Step up to a dedicated business class car with wider seats, extra legroom, priority boarding and deboarding, and a complimentary non-alcoholic beverage—all with the peace of mind of a pre-reserved seat.
Other Transportation
- All other included transfers throughout the tour are handled by private motor coaches, which use steps for boarding and do not generally offer ramps or lifts.
- Travelers joining the tour extension will also cross by ferry from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay.
- As this tour relies on trains for the majority of your transportation, please pack with mobility in mind. Travelers are limited to one checked bag and one personal item per person, as storage on trains and motor coaches is limited.
- The cost of a checked bag is not included in your airline ticket.
- Some airlines may impose additional charges if you exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
- Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights.
- Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on.
- Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels and airports.
Train Baggage Allowances & Expectations
- When traveling on the Amtrak Cascades, luggage is checked similarly to an airline. Each passenger may check their bag free of charge, provided it does not exceed 50 pounds or 75 linear inches (length + width + height).
- We recommend packing lightweight, moisture-wicking layers that can be easily added or shed throughout the day, as Pacific Northwest temperatures can shift quickly—particularly at higher elevations like Mount Rainier. A waterproof jacket or rain shell is an absolute must in this region.
- A sturdy pair of waterproof walking shoes or hiking-ready sneakers is strongly recommended, especially for exploring Stanley Park, Mount Rainier National Park, and the trails of Butchart Gardens.
- You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
- It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
- We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single-use plastic waste.
- In case of emergencies, we also recommend packing your medical insurance card in your carry-on.
- Go Ahead handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.
- Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three- to four-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
- Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
- Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets; as such, our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
- All of North America operates on 110-120 volts and uses Type A or B plugs with two flat pins or two flat pins and one round pin, respectively.
- Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
- Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
- We recommend purchasing excursions at least three days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
- Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather, or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
- Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
- At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at cdc.gov.

If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center or contact our Customer Experience Team. Please note that, at this time, not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
- The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
- This tour includes three dinners: They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, or a soft drink, as well as water.
- Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet-style with hot and cold options.
- Portland’s food scene is as creative and boundary-pushing as the city itself. Look out for Stumptown Coffee, the city’s legendary food cart pods serving everything from Vietnamese banh mi to wood-fired pizza, and the Pacific Northwest’s beloved Dungeness crab. The Willamette Valley’s world-class pinot noir is never far from the table.
- Seattle is a seafood lover’s paradise—fresh-caught salmon, Dungeness crab, and briny Puget Sound oysters are staples of the local table. Pike Place Market is the ideal place to sample the city’s finest produce and artisan goods, and the city’s thriving Asian food scene is not to be missed.
- Vancouver’s culinary landscape reflects its rich multicultural fabric, with some of North America’s finest Chinese, Japanese, and Southeast Asian cuisine sitting comfortably alongside Pacific Northwest seafood and farm-to-table dining. Don’t leave without trying spot prawns, fresh sushi, and a bowl of ramen in one of the city’s celebrated noodle houses.
- On Vancouver Island (on the tour extension), Victoria’s British roots show up deliciously in its beloved afternoon tea tradition—best experienced at the grand Fairmont Empress. Beyond that, look out for locally harvested shellfish, wild salmon, and the island’s thriving craft beer and cider scene.
- At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
- We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10-$12 USD per person per day for your Tour Director and $4 USD per person per day for your driver.

- We strongly advise that you take debit and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
- You can use most cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
- International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you don’t already have at least one card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
- Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your Tour Director, local guides, and bus drivers.
- To help you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend downloading the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. It’s free and provides information about important deadlines and entry requirements, as well as your detailed itinerary, packing tips, and more.
