Day 2: Arrival in Rome
Included meal: Welcome dinner
Welcome to Italy! Meet your Tour Director at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Afterward, get to know the rest of your group over an included dinner, served with beer or wine, at a nearby restaurant.
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of Rome
Included meal: Breakfast
From the Forum to the Pantheon to the holy confines of Vatican City, Rome bursts with UNESCO-listed landmarks. Today, you’ll follow in the footsteps of the ancients as you explore the capital of modern-day Italy with a local guide.
- Step inside the iconic Colosseum, the monumental amphitheater where gladiators once battled for glory before roaring Roman crowds. Tour the nearly 2,000-year-old structure, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven New Wonders of the World.
- Follow the Via Sacra, the ancient Sacred Way that runs along the foot of Palatine Hill, leading you directly into the heart of the Roman Forum.
- Pass through the Arch of Titus as you enter the Forum, a first-century honorific arch that marked triumphal processions into the city center.
- Marvel at the grand Basilica of Maxentius, once one of the largest buildings in the ancient city, and pass the Temple of Vesta, where the sacred flame of Rome was tended by Vestal Virgins.
- View the Curia Iulia, the ancient Senate House where Rome's political elite debated the fate of an empire, and the Temple of Divus Julius, dedicated to Julius Caesar himself.
- Enjoy free time to wander through the Forum on your own, surrounded by ancient ruins and the echoes of a civilization that shaped the world.
The neighborhood of Trastevere is something of a hidden gem—an eccentric, mostly car-free district filled with narrow streets and delectable trattorias. If you choose to add our snack-filled walking tour this evening, you’ll explore this art-filled haven while eating your way through pasta, pastries, and gelato. Otherwise, enjoy some free time to yourself (and maybe scope out some landmarks you absolutely want to see).
Please note: You must confirm your passport information at least 30 days prior to departure to ensure we can secure your tickets to the Colosseum and Forum.
Day 4: Rome's fountains & squares or Galleria Doria Pamphilj
Included meal: Breakfast
Your morning in Rome is completely free — linger over a cappuccino and a cornetto at a neighborhood bar, wander a piazza that catches your eye, or simply let the city's energy carry you wherever it will.
Come afternoon, choose between two great options:
- Join a local guide on a stroll through the heart of the Eternal City, taking in its most celebrated fountains and squares — from the Spanish Steps and the legendary Trevi Fountain to the Pantheon and the grand Piazza Navona — with a well-earned gelato stop along the way.
- Step inside the Galleria Doria Pamphilij, a stunning Renaissance palazzo that houses Rome's largest private art collection and one of the city's best-kept secrets — capped off with a gelato tasting before heading back.
Day 5: Free day in Rome
Included meal: Breakfast
Trade the cobblestones of Rome for the rolling hills of the countryside with today's optional excursion to Tivoli's legendary Villa d'Este. One of Italy's most celebrated Renaissance retreats, the estate dazzles with its elaborately terraced gardens, monumental fountains, and centuries of storied history — a breathtaking escape from the urban buzz. Before heading back to the city, sit down to a leisurely farm lunch that lets the flavors of the Roman countryside do the talking.
For a self-guided exploration, consider heading to the old Jewish Quarter, where formal museums and streetside memorials pay tribute to a once-established community. (Don't leave without trying carciofi alla Giudia — simply seasoned, double-fried artichokes.)
Day 6: Sightseeing tour of Castel Gandolfo & Frascati wine tasting
Included meals: Breakfast, Wine tasting
Escape the Italian capital for the day and set a course for the Castelli Romani hills, with a visit to the enchanting town of Castel Gandolfo. Hugging the hills along Lake Albano, this town has been honored as one of The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy — and one afternoon here makes it easy to see why.
- Join a guided tour of the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo, the opulent hilltop villa that served as the summer residence of the pope for more than 400 years. Today operating as a museum, its grand halls and sweeping lake views offer a fascinating glimpse into centuries of papal life.
- Wander the charming streets of the village itself, taking in the sun-dappled piazzas and panoramic vistas over Lake Albano that have earned Castel Gandolfo its place among Italy's most beautiful settlements.
- Continue to the nearby Frascati wine country for a leisurely tasting at a local producer. Work your way through a selection of three reds, three whites, and a glass of spumante, all accompanied by a generous buffet of homemade olive oils and regional specialties — a delicious introduction to the wines of the Castelli Romani hills.
Return to Rome in the early evening, with a new appreciation for the riches that lie just beyond the city's ancient walls.
Day 7: Free day in Rome, Monument Victor Emmanuel II & rooftop farewell dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
Some of the holiest places of the Catholic faith can be found in Rome — specifically in the sovereign Vatican City. Add this morning's excursion to visit the blessed landmarks of the world's smallest country (think: St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel) or stay in Rome and explore on your own. Either way, savor these last free hours in the Eternal City — there's always one more piazza to discover, one more espresso to linger over.
As evening draws in, regroup with your fellow travelers for a fitting finale. Walk to the magnificent Monument to Victor Emmanuel II — the neoclassical tribute to the man who unified Italy in the mid-19th century. Its soaring columns and sweeping staircases make for an unforgettable last impression of Rome after dark. From there, it's a short stroll to Centro Storico, where your group gathers one last time for a farewell dinner at a rooftop restaurant in Rome's historic center. With the city's rooftops and illuminated domes stretching out before you, raise a glass to an unforgettable journey.
Please note: Travelers who wish to climb the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II for panoramic views should be prepared to ascend several staircases to reach the main portico, with a different route taken on the way down.

And if you’re itching to venture out into Tuscany’s storied landscape, our optional visit to Siena and Chianti has you covered.

Day 8: Train to Florence
Included meal: Breakfast
Today, travel by train through the scenic Apennine Mountains to Florence — Tuscany's capital and the world's greatest treasure trove of Renaissance art and architecture. You'll have the rest of the day to settle in and explore at your own pace — but if you'd like to make the most of your first afternoon, add today's optional excursion and let Michelangelo's Florence leave you speechless.
Please note: You’ll need to handle your own baggage during the train transfer.
Day 9: Sightseeing tour of Florence
Included meal: Breakfast
Florence was the beating heart of the Renaissance and is the final resting place of luminaries such as Galileo, Michelangelo, and Machiavelli. Today, a local guide will show you its highlights during a sightseeing tour before letting you loose for a free afternoon in the city.
- Head to Florence’s UNESCO-listed historic center and view its exquisite, 15th-century cathedral—the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, or Duomo, which is the world’s third-largest church.
- Pass Giotto’s Campanile, or bell tower, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that rises nearly 280 feet above the city and features the same red, white, and green marble found on the Duomo’s facade.
- Explore the Basilica of Santa Croce. Renowned for its magnificent frescoes depicting the life of St. Francis, this 13th-century Franciscan church also houses the tombs of Michelangelo and Machiavelli.
- Walk past the medieval Ponte Vecchio—an iconic bridge that spans the Arno River and has been lined with shops since the 13th century—to the Piazza della Signoria. Situated just outside the Palazzo Vecchio, this beautiful square is home to several notable statues, including a replica of Michelangelo’s David and the Fountain of Neptune.
Tour complete, either return to your hotel or stay behind and explore Florence at your leisure. Maybe grab a friend, scope out a cafe, pair a just-pulled espresso with a pastry, and look on as the city goes about its business. And don’t be afraid to linger: Dopopranzo—the concept of relaxing at your table with post-meal conversation—is welcome.
Day 10: Free day in Florence
Included meal: Breakfast
Enjoy a free day in Florence at your leisure. To dig deeper into this city’s culinary traditions, be sure to ask your Tour Director for recommendations; to combine a day trip to countryside city of Siena is followed by a jaunt through Chianti, complete with a winery tour and a tasting of local vintages. Add it to your itinerary to experience medieval Tuscany at its best.
Finally, join your groupmates in the evening for a farewell drink and toast to a trip well-spent.
