Itinerary

Charleston, South Carolina

Day 1: Arrival in Charleston

Welcome to South Carolina! You’ll likely arrive in the afternoon: Once you transfer to your hotel, the choice is yours to relax or get some early exploration in. If you’d like to combine both, make your way to White Point Garden. Sited at the city’s southern tip, this public green space boasts shaded walking paths and an array of monuments, all in view of Charleston Harbor.

Day 2: Sightseeing tour of Charleston

Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner

Since 1670, Charleston has sat at the very heart of South Carolina. On your first full day as a group, strike out into town with a local guide to get an insider’s perspective on the Holy City—its landmarks, history, and more.

  • Pass the South Carolina State Arsenal, the Romanesque “Old Citadel” originally built to suppress slave revolts; the campus of the College of Charleston; and the Four Corners of Law, a famous intersection cornered by local, state, federal, and religious institutions.
  • Check out another trio of local icons: the seaside promenade of the Battery, the 13 pastel facades of Rainbow Row, and the Charleston Museum. (Founded in 1773, it’s the oldest museum in the country!)
  • Pause at The Exchange—a U.S. National Historic Landmark used by the British as a prisoner of war compound during the American Revolution—before ending with free time for lunch at the centuries-old Charleston City Market.

Bellies (and camera reels) full, board your bus and drive to Charleston’s northern reaches to visit Middleton Place. Now home to the oldest landscaped gardens in the United States, the property once functioned as a rice plantation. After a tour of its grounds and a museum, you’ll enter Eliza’s House—a reconstructed freedman’s home—to learn about the legacy of slavery and some of the more than 2,800 people held in bondage by the Middleton family.

Finally, return to Charleston for a Lowcountry welcome dinner, served with beer or wine, before retiring for the night.
