12 days | 15 days with Kalamata & Athens Coast extension |
- Group size
- 12–22 travelers
- Activity level
Trace the Odyssey across Greece’s most mythic islands.
There’s a reason Homer set his greatest epic in these waters. The Ionian Islands are rugged and wild, teeming with thick olive groves and wrapped by seas that shift from sapphire to emerald depending on the hour. This tour goes all-in on antiquity, from standing inside Athens’ sun-bleached Acropolis to cruising along the crystal-clear lake in Kefalonia’s Melissani Cave to walking the harbor streets of Ithaca that Odysseus spent a decade dreaming about. Corfu’s Venetian elegance awaits at the end of the line, as does Mycenae if you take us up on the extension. If Greek mythology set your early imagination ablaze—or if you’re yearning for Greek island jewels just off the beaten path—this is the trip you’ve been waiting for.

Day 3: Sightseeing tour of the Acropolis & tasting tour
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
Long before Homer mapped his hero’s journey, Athens was already ancient. Today, follow a local guide through the landmarks and flavors of this storied city.
- Walk through the Plaka neighborhood and up to the Acropolis—Athens’ UNESCO-recognized hilltop citadel—to stand before the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion.
- Descend into the eclectic Psyrri neighborhood, alive with artisan workshops, pausing along the way for authentic Greek bites.
Spend your lunch time and a free afternoon retracing your steps through Plaka, or venture out to Cape Sounion on our optional excursion. There, high above the Aegean on a sheer limestone bluff, stand the ancient ruins of the Temple of Poseidon, who was an antagonist in “The Odyssey.”
Kefalonia3 nights
Day 4: Ferry to Kefalonia
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Travel across the Peloponnese, stopping along the way to admire the Corinth Canal—a lockless, four-mile-long cut that links the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Then, continue on to Patras, Greece’s third-largest city, to board a ferry headed for the largest of the Ionian Islands: Kefalonia.
After settling into your hotel, sit down with your group for an included dinner, served with your choice of beer or wine.
Day 5: Melissani Lake, olive mill visit & wine tasting
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Wine tasting
Kefalonia is the kind of place that makes you understand why Odysseus spent years trying to get back to his home in the Ionian Islands. Today, you’ll get to explore its wild, mountainous majesty from land and sea.
- Drive across the island and admire dramatic coastal landscapes from a viewpoint above the white sands of Myrtos, one of Greece’s most loved beaches.
- Head to the outskirts of Sami village and stop at Melissani Cave. The underground cave, which was referred to in “The Odyssey” as the Cave of the Nymphs, is filled with water so clear that boats look like they’re hovering in mid-air. Board one with your group for a cruise, watching the sunlight that shoots down through an open ceiling dance and dazzle on the lake’s surface.
- Stop by an olive oil mill and walk through the production process. See and smell each elaborate step, then move on to a tasting of select oils paired with local produce.
- Sit down with a local guide for an expert-led tasting of island wines. You might sample varietals like citrusy, acidic robola; sweet, full-bodied mavrodaphne; and sugary, sun-dried muscat.
Day 6: Sightseeing tour of Ithaca
Included meal: Breakfast
Today, you’ll walk the legendary setting of “The Odyssey.” Ithaca, the rocky island that Odysseus called home and yearned to return to, awaits just across the water. Board a ferry and step ashore.
- Make your way to Vathy, Ithaca’s charming capital, for an orientation through its harbor-hugging streets. Seek out the bronze statue of Odysseus standing watch over the waterfront, a fitting welcome to his homeland. Enjoy some free time to browse the local shops before moving on.
- Journey up to the Monastery of Panagia Katharon, perched high on the slopes of Mount Neritos. Take in the sea-framed views that unfold over southern Ithaca—the very same that greeted Odysseus on his ship.
- Head north to Stavros, where Ulysses’ bust stands proudly in the main square, for a visit to the local archaeological museum.
- Wind down to the picture-perfect village of Kioni. Its sheltered cove is dotted with a smattering of pastel-colored houses. Linger over lunch or explore the waterfront at your own pace before returning to Piso Aetos and ferrying back to Kefalonia.
Lefkada Region1 night
Day 7: Ferry to Lefkada
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Board a ferry this morning and travel north to Lefkada, an Ionian island famous for its sheer cliffs, mountain villages and monasteries, and white-sand beaches. Disembark and enjoy a leisurely transfer to your hotel before sitting down for an included dinner in the evening, served with your choice of beer or wine.
Corfu3 nights
Day 8: Sightseeing tour of the Necromanteion of Acheron & ferry to Corfu
Included meal: Breakfast
Before Odysseus could find his way home, he first had to descend into darkness. Today, you’ll follow his path. Travel to the Necromanteion of Acheron in the rugged Epirus region, situated on a hilltop near the modern village of Mesopotamos. In antiquity, it was believed to sit at the convergence of the Acheron, Cocytus**,** and Pyriphlegethon rivers. The ancient Greeks believed this site to be the gateway to Hades, and a local guide will show you through its subterranean stone corridors, recounting how pilgrims endured days of fasting and rituals before being led into the depths to “consult” the dead.
After finishing up at the Necromanteion, board an afternoon ferry bound for the island of Corfu.
Day 9: Sightseeing tour of Corfu
Included meals: Breakfast, Liqueur tasting, Tasting
Corfu has long been a crossroads of empires: The Venetians, French, British, and Byzantines all left their mark on this lush, olive-draped island. In Homer’s telling, it was here that Odysseus washed ashore and was welcomed by the Phaeacians before finally making his way home. Today, follow a local guide through the layered history of Corfu Town.
- Stroll through Spianada Square, one of the grandest plazas in all of Greece, where the island’s long Venetian chapter is written in the elegant arcaded facades that line its edges.
- Step inside the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon, built in the 1580s and adorned with shimmering icons. This Greek Orthodox gem houses the sacred relics of Corfu’s patron saint and boasts the tallest bell tower in the Ionian Islands.
- Drive to the Achilleion Palace, once the lavish summer retreat of German Kaiser Wilhelm II, with columned terraces and mythological statues overlooking the sea.
- Round out the morning with a tasting of marmalade, liqueur, and other products made from Corfu’s beloved kumquat—a bright, tangy little fruit with Protected Designation of Origin status.
Enjoy a free evening in Corfu—or, if you want something a little livelier, add our optional excursion for a traditional Greek dinner.
Day 10: Free day on Corfu
Included meal: Breakfast
Spend a free day enjoying Corfu at your own pace, or cast off on our optional boat cruise to Paxos and Antipaxos. This idyllic pair of islands is strewn with olive groves and surrounded by the electric-blue waters of the Ionian.

Kalamata & Athens Coast extension
Extend your journey into the Peloponnese—a region in southern Greece whose mainland is a popular vacation spot for locals. Its charm rivals that of the Greek Islands, and its crowds are far fewer. You’ll walk through the Lion Gate at Mycenae, where Agamemnon’s Bronze Age citadel has been kept watch for 3,000 years, then wind down to the olive groves and glittering coastline of Kalamata, its briny namesake fruit waiting for you at the open-air market.
Kalamata2 nights
Day 12: Kalamata via Mycenae
Included meal: Breakfast
Travel south across the Peloponnese, pausing first at the narrow slash of the Corinth Canal, a four-mile cut linking the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Then, continue to Mycenae, the Bronze Age stronghold of King Agamemnon, mythological commander of the Greek forces at Troy and one of the most memorable figures in Homer’s worlds.
- Pass through the Lion Gate, Mycenae’s monumental main entrance and one of the oldest surviving sculptures in Europe. Erected around 1250 B.C., its twin lion reliefs have stood guard over this citadel for more than three millennia.
- Descend into the Treasury of Atreus (also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon), a vast beehive-shaped tomb of mysterious provenance, for a glimpse into its cavernous stone chamber.
Continue south to Kalamata, celebrated for its olive groves, Byzantine history, and jaw-dropping Peloponnesian coastlines. Rest up in your hotel before a free day in the city tomorrow.
Day 13: Free day in Kalamata
Included meal: Breakfast
Kalamata is yours today. Stroll the waterfront, hunt down the city’s world-famous olives at the open-air market, or settle into a seaside terrace with a cold glass of something local. Or, let the Taygetus mountains pull you inland on today’s optional excursion, where the warrior ruins of Sparta and the UNESCO-recognized ghost town of Mystras, awash in frescoes and Byzantine relics, tell a side of the Peloponnese that most travelers skip.
