Itinerary

San José2 nights
Day 1: Arrival in San José
Welcome to Costa Rica! After touching down in San José, make the short transfer to your hotel. You’ll touch down later in the day, so use the rest of your day to settle into your room, grab a bite to eat, and look forward to the rest of your journey.
Day 2: Cartago & Irazú Volcano National Park
Included meals: Breakfast, Welcome dinner
Today, journey to the 16th-century city of Cartago—the first colonial settlement established on Costa Rican soil. Upon arrival, join your Tour Director for some guided sightseeing.
- Visit the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, a uniquely designed Roman Catholic cathedral that combines both colonial and Byzantine elements. Built in 1639, it predates the founding of Costa Rica by almost 200 years.
- Explore the Santiago Apostol Parish Ruins—a half-completed, 150-year-old church that now anchors a public park—and end with a walk through the bustling Central Market.
- Make your way through the Central Valley, Costa Rica’s stunning heartland, to Irazu Volcano National Park. Then, set off for a leisurely trail walk around its namesake attraction. Called “El Coloso,” or “The Colossus,” by locals, Irazu towers over 11,000 feet above sea level, making it the tallest active volcano in the country.
- Stop at viewing platforms to soak in the beauty of the volcano’s massive main crater and the brilliant green lagoon at its center.
Make the drive back to San Jose and freshen up. Tonight, you’ll keep getting to know your group at a welcome dinner—a folklore-themed outing filled with traditional music, regional dance, and sweeping views of the Costa Rican capital. During the meal, enjoy your choice of beer or rum punch.
Arenal Region3 nights
Day 3: Sightseeing tour of San José & transfer to Arenal Region via coffee farm
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting, Lunch
Before departing for the Arenal Region, take a brief drive though the place that’s hosted you thus far—San Jose. Founded in 1736, Costa Rica’s capital has since grown into one of Latin America’s leading cities.
- See La Sabana, an urban green space dubbed “the lungs of San Jose;” the National Stadium of Costa Rica, the first modern multi-purpose arena built in the region; and the peaceful Rohrmoser neighborhood.
- Stop at the Plaza de la Cultura—a hub of local life—and admire the facade of the National Theater of Costa Rica from the bustling square.
- Pass the National Museum, instantly identifiable by its yolk-yellow paint and castle-like turrets. Once upon a time, it housed soldiers during the 1948 Costa Rica Civil War; nowadays, it holds a collection of era-spanning treasures.
- Marvel at the steel exterior of the Edificio Metalico—the “Metal Building” that was prefabricated in Belgium and shipped piecemeal to San Jose in 1888.
After wrapping up your sightseeing, head to a local farm and discover one of Costa Rica’s finest exports—coffee. Regarded as some of the best in the world thanks to a Goldilocks combination of growing conditions, Costa Rican coffee accounts for close to 8% of the country’s gross domestic product.
- Tour a family-owned estate to learn how coffee cherries yield coffee beans, and how those pits—after a multi-step process of cleaning and roasting—eventually become the flavorful drink in your mug each morning.
- Learn how the estate protects and preserves the area’s biodiversity, and how it employs age-old methods to cultivate its crops.
- Indulge in a tasting of some of the farm’s coffees, then stop at a restaurant in the Fraijanes region for an included lunch.
Finally, hit the road for the last leg of your journey to the Arenal region. Craving a soak after a day of travel? Tonight’s optional excursion combines muscle-easing hot springs, volcanic views, and a tantalizing dinner into a single outing. We’ve planned everything—all you need to do is add it to your itinerary.
Day 4: Hiking tour of Arenal Volcano National Park
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Get a brisk start to your day with a Tour Director-led hike through Arenal Volcano National Park. Established in 1991, this preserve lays claim to a pair of dormant volcanoes and shelters hundreds upon hundreds of bird species.
- Marvel at the mile-high Arenal Volcano. A near-perfect cone rising above the Sierra de Tilaran mountain range, it hasn’t erupted since 2010—though steam still snakes skyward from its caldera.
- Try to spot slow-moving sloths, snakes coiled around tree limbs, and spiders resting in their webs as you trek along a loop trail.
- Gaze at Lake Arenal—the largest in Costa Rica—and watch for birds such as northern jacanas, woodpeckers, and kingfishers. If you’re lucky, you might even come across a resplendent quetzal, distinguishable by its iridescent, emerald plumage.
Lunch is always better after a busy, beautiful morning—and if you’d like to pair yours with a tour of a carbon-negative farm, be sure to add our afternoon excursion to your itinerary. Otherwise, relax and recover at your hotel before tonight's included dinner, accompanied with your choice of beer or rum punch.
Please note: In Arenal Volcano National Park, you should be able to hike for about two miles over occasionally uneven terrain.
Day 5: Free day in the Arenal Region
Included meal: Breakfast
Enjoy a free morning to roam the Arenal region at your own pace—or get even closer to its iconic volcano by adding our optional excursion to your itinerary. Board a kayak and join your guide for a paddle through magical coves and lagoons as wildlife hums all around you.
To keep exploring (from a slightly different perspective), jump right into our optional afternoon skywalk and venture through the canopy of Arenal’s rainforest on a series of suspension bridges.
Prefer to spend the free evening on your own? Ask your Tour Director about any local festivals or cultural events happening during your stay, or wait for nightfall and enjoy epic stargazing. (The Arenal area is known for its dark skies and celestial views.)
Guanacaste Coast2 nights
Day 6: Guanacaste Coast via Palo Verde wildlife cruise
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Give Arenal one last goodbye, cruising alongside its namesake lake en route to Guanacaste. Along the way, stop in Palo Verde National Park—a preserve protecting one of the only remaining tropical dry forests in Central America.
- Join a naturalist guide aboard a riverboat and tour the park’s wetlands, a haven for migratory birds like scarlet macaws and toucans.
- Listen to your guide as you float down the Tempisque River, keeping an eye out for crocodiles, iguanas, and other wildlife.
- Visit a restaurant on the banks of the Tempisque and dig into an included traditional lunch in full view of the river.
Finish driving to the coastal province of Guanacaste—a mecca for surfers, hikers, and sunbathers alike—then check into your beachside resort and settle in for the night.
Day 7: Free day on the Guanacaste Coast
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
How will you spend your final day in Costa Rica? To log some time sailing on—and snorkeling in—the pristine waters of the Guanacaste coast, add our optional excursion to your itinerary. Alternatively, stay ashore and lay out on the sand.
Either way, you’ll celebrate your trip with your fellow travelers at this evening’s farewell dinner, served with your choice of beer or rum punch.
Flight Home
Day 8: Departure
Included meal: Breakfast (excluding early morning departures)
Transfer to the airport in the nearby city of Liberia for your flight home—or, if you’d prefer a few more days on the beach to a few hours in the air, tack on our extension to stay in Guanacaste.
Guanacaste Coast extension
Blue waters, fading to white sands, running to a verdant tree line. It’s a combination you’d find on a postcard—or, in Guanacaste, all around you. For some of the best beach days of your life (made even more vibrant by the local culture), extend your tour and stay in this slice of heaven, right on the edge of the Pacific.
Guanacaste Coast2 nights
Day 8: Sightseeing tour of Santa Cruz & Guanacaste cooking workshop
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Instead of lounging on the beach (there'll be plenty of time for that tomorrow!) strike inland with your Tour Director to visit historic Santa Cruz and experience authentic Guanacaste cuisine.
- Begin in Santa Cruz. Honored as the National Folklore City of Costa Rica, its famous around the country for its expression of Costa Rican culture, apparent in art, music, and festivals.
- Continue to a local ranch for an authentic Guanacastecan culinary workshop. Roll up your sleeves to make hand-patted tortillas, prepare traditional picadillos with fresh farm products, cook wood-fired beef stew, and bake bread in a clay oven, all while learning about regional cuisine.
- Savor the fruits of your labor during an included lunch featuring your handcrafted dishes—from flavorful beef hash to hearty stew and sweet empanadas for dessert.
- Before departing, enjoy a traditional Guanacaste dance performance accompanied by a local band, then transfer back to the Guanacaste coast and unwind for the rest of the day.
Day 9: Free day on the Guanacaste Coast
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Savor the sun on your skin as the sea rumbles ceaselessly on. Float atop the cooling waters of your hotel’s pool. Ask your Tour Director for their favorite local spots. How you spend your last day on the Guanacaste coast is your call—but whatever you choose, you’re bound to enjoy.
Before turning in for the night, come together with your group for an included dinner, served with beer or rum punch, and share your favorite memories from your trip.
