280 Go Ahead travelers experienced unexpected disruptions in the Middle East—this is how we helped
When conflict broke out, EF Go Ahead Tours had 14 tour groups in or headed to the region. Thanks to the efforts of our emergency response teams, everyone was home in a matter of days.
On February 28, 2026, escalating tensions in the Middle East disrupted travel plans for countless individuals, including 14 groups of travelers who were in or headed to countries in the region with EF Go Ahead Tours. Almost immediately after the news of military action in Iran broke, our 24/7 global incident response team jumped into action, ensuring all 280 of our impacted travelers were transported out of the region and safely returned home.
As the conflict spread across the Persian Gulf and travelers urgently prepared to leave the region, the reasons why more Americans and Canadians are turning to dedicated tour operators to plan, book, and manage their international travels were made clear. Whether our travelers were touring in Jordan, connecting through Turkey or the United Arab Emirates, or prepping for takeoff in the U.S., we worked swiftly to keep them all safe. Here’s how.

Keeping travelers informed
Before the conflict made international headlines, our global and emergency response teams reached out to regional contacts. We identified 280 people either touring in the Middle East, leaving for a tour there within a week, or connecting through the region. Within hours, each traveler received messages—texts, emails, and notifications in the Go Ahead app—informing them of the situation and our plans to help.
As things developed, our teams maintained constant contact with local suppliers, monitored guidance from the U.S. Department of State, and sought updates from embassies in the area. Whatever information we received was relayed to staff on the ground who took appropriate action.
“[Our Tour Director] Samia and the security staff explained each step of our evacuation, as well as any changes in plans in real time,” said traveler Matthew, who was on tour in Egypt. “They were unfalteringly helpful in answering our questions, and kind throughout the process. I never felt unsafe.”
Bringing travelers home
When the State Department issues travel advisories, our global incident response and flight operations teams quickly move travelers out of affected areas. In this case, we placed groups on flights out of Dubai before the closure of commercial airspace—making Go Ahead one of the first tour operators to do so. In Jordan, another group’s original flights home on March 1 were canceled; we rebooked them and got them out of the country by 1 p.m. that same day.
Out of an abundance of caution, we also implemented the State Department’s initial guidance to evacuate travelers from Egypt. After confirming that information with our contacts in the Overseas Security Advisory Council, we took immediate action:
- Leveraging our expertise in flight and ground operations, we immediately contacted trusted airlines and transportation partners to reroute a group in Luxor to Milan, where they were greeted by a local Tour Director. Meals, accommodations, transfers, and a flight home were arranged at no additional cost to travelers, all before they arrived in Italy.
- Another group had touched down in London for a layover en route to Cairo. Upon landing, Go Ahead told them about the situation and rebooked them for free on flights back to the U.S., regardless of whether they opted into our airfare package.
“I am amazed how rapidly our flights and different hotels were booked at no extra charge to us,” traveler Connie said. “All people working on our behalf were extremely kind and quickly answered any questions.”
It’s important to note that our tours of Egypt have since resumed. While Go Ahead continues monitoring conditions on the ground, we believe the country can safely support international tourism.

Giving travelers flexibility
Besides staying in constant contact and managing the logistical challenges of changing a trip at a moment’s notice, we issued vouchers to each traveler on our three impacted tours. Furthermore, we implemented highly flexible rebooking and cancellation options for all 11 tours of Egypt and Turkey that were initially postponed.
“EF did an amazing job with a strange situation. They very quickly organized our departure and took care of all the details—very communicative all through the night,” traveler Susan said. “They worked tirelessly to get things settled for us. I was so impressed that EF took care of paying for flying folks home [who] had booked their flights independently.”
Helping travelers at every turn
Travel inherently carries risk, and when a traveler books a guided tour, we know they trust they’ll be supported the whole way through.
“Traveling the world is a life-changing experience, rooted in lifelong learning, connection, community, and well-being. At EF Go Ahead Tours and EF World Journeys, our focus is ensuring that the tens of thousands of travelers who explore more than 400 destinations with us each year feel supported every step of the way,” said Heidi Durflinger, CEO of EF World Journeys. “We stay closely connected to what’s happening on the ground so our travelers can explore with confidence and peace of mind.”
Our emergency response team was created for that purpose—and no matter the situation, travelers can count on us to respond appropriately. All Go Ahead travelers benefit from:
- 24/7 support on every tour
- Continuous monitoring of global events
- Established partnerships with travel advisory groups, airlines, and others
- Proactive rerouting and rescheduling to avoid dangerous situations
Travelers Marie and Park were getting ready to board their Nile River cruise when evacuation orders were issued. Rather than waiting and reacting, we proactively brought them home—illustrating exactly why Go Ahead focuses so strongly on traveler safety and support.
“Samia ... and [EF staffer] Greer [were] the picture of calm and reassurance, which was helpful for those stressed about the unknown when the tour was cut short,” they said. “[I] can’t express enough my gratitude to EF’s staff for taking such wonderful care of us in every way.”

Beyond the keyboard, he loves a lunch-break soccer game; at home, he enjoys throwing on some lo-fi beats and cuddling with his six-year-old Wheaten Terrier, Piper.
