Unhidden gems: The 6 best-kept secrets on our Safari Tours

Oct 06, 2020 by Ellie Lutes

Spotting the Big Five is the highlight of any Safari tour—but the one-of-a-kind moments you’ll only experience with us make our small group Safaris true standouts. Check out the top six unique moments you can experience on our tours of Africa.

1. Experiencing the “African massage” in your own private safari vehicle

On our tours that visit Tanzania and Kenya, you have the chance to travel in your group’s private 4x4 overland safari vehicle. This is the best way to get up close and personal with the many animals that call this swath of Africa home. The ride is nicknamed “the African massage” because you’re really off-roading—it can get bumpy!

2. Seeing the Okavango Delta from above

Reaching the largest inland Delta system on Earth at the Okavango Delta is not a simple task. Your group will get to experience flying in a small private charter plane to get to and from this remote ecosystem. Be sure to pack light!

3. Getting to know the Big Five with your naturalist guide

Keep your eyes peeled and your binoculars handy in order to check off seeing the “Big Five” on any of our safari itineraries. Rhinos, elephants, cape buffalo, leopards, and lions all call these parts of Africa home, and your safari guide will know the best places to see them in action.

4. Practically hanging out with wildlife at your hotel

Take in the views of a floodlit watering hole from one of the many indoor or outdoor balconies at The Ark Lodge in Kenya. If you’re feeling adventurous, take the trip down to the ground level bunker and get up close to the animals passing through. Elephants rule this watering hole and the salt licks nearby, but hyenas and leopards are known to stop by as well!

5. Learning about—and supporting—local culture

You’ll pay a visit to a Maasai village, where you’ll learn about the local way of life from a village elder. Welcoming visitors is one way the community supports itself, and your visit gives back to the Maasai people who call the area home.

6. Exploring landscapes that are a blast from the past

On tour in Tanzania, you’ll have the chance to step foot in an actual crater! You will descend 1,000 feet into the Ngorongoro Crater, which covers over 100 square miles, for a game drive. It is one of the most mesmerizing sights in Africa! While in the region you can visit the “Cradle of Mankind” at Olduvai Gorge, which is a site that provides the earliest known evidence of our human ancestors.

Experience these one of-a-kind moments on our small group Safaris.
