Four different countries. Five scenic trains. More highlights than we can count.

How do Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy interpret Alpine life? This tour dives into their similarities—and their beautiful differences—with help from some of the world’s great rail routes. You’ll start in Munich, the beer capital of the world, before taking to the quaint streets of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the heart of German Alpine culture. Then come the scenic trains: the Mittenwaldbahn to Innsbruck, the Arlberg Railway to Zurich, the Gotthard Panorama Express to Lugano, and the Centovalli to Domodossola, each journey proving more gorgeous than the last. And to wrap your travels with high fashion and Belle Epoque architecture, sign up for the extension to Milan.

Milan extension

Rome has its ruins. Florence has the Renaissance. Milan has a little of everything—hulking Gothic cathedrals, Belle Epoque shopping arcades, and a collection of museums that give it a well-earned reputation for culture. Take a couple of days to explore the city; for a more curated look at the city’s haute bona fides, join us on an optional outing to the Teatro alla Scala and Brera.

Milan

Day 12: Transfer to Milan & sightseeing tour

Included meal: Breakfast

A global capital of fashion. An international mecca of music and theater. Milan might be Italy’s second city, but it holds its own on the world’s stage. Drop your bags off at your hotel, then join a local guide for a tour of Milan’s highlights on foot, by tram, and via metro.

  • Catch the tram or metro and ride from your hotel into Zone 1—the city’s centro storico, or historic center.
  • Enter the Gothic confines of Milan Cathedral, the biggest church in the country. It took close to six centuries to complete; savor every detail before continuing on your way.
  • Stroll the iron-and-glass-domed halls of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Italy’s oldest active shopping arcade. Look up, down, and all around—every surface is a thing of beauty.
  • Climb to the roof of the Galleria for a walk along the Highline and bask in a view of Milan that most visitors never get to see. Then, return to your hotel via tram or metro and spend the rest of your day how you please.

Day 13: Free day in Milan

Included meal: Breakfast

The Teatro alla Scala and the Brera district are quintessential Milan—cultured, refined, and known the world over. Add our optional excursion to your itinerary to visit one of opera’s great venues before strolling the city’s cobblestone core.

Alternatively, take some time for yourself. If you want a close-up look at one of the greatest works of the Renaissance era, buy tickets in advance for an afternoon entrance to The Last Supper Museum. Its crown jewel: Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece of a mural, depicting Jesus and his followers sharing a meal.

Whatever your choice, rejoin your groupmates in Milan this evening for a farewell drink before calling it a night.
