Brush up on basic Italian. Though you’ll hear the Neapolitan dialect around town, Italian’s the official language of Naples—and like anywhere else, it helps to know some basic phrases. Say:

• “Grazie” when you want to thank someone.
• “Mi chiamo (your name)” when you want to introduce yourself to a new acquaintance.
• “Per favore” when you want to say “please.”
• “Permesso” when you want to say “excuse me” while making your way through a busy market or cultural site.
• “Scusi” when you want to say “excuse me” while getting someone’s attention.

Keep your money close. Pickpockets can be a problem in Naples, especially in crowded places, at popular tourist landmarks, on the metro, and at train stations. Keep your belongings secured in a money belt whenever possible.

The euro is Italy’s official currency. Credit cards are widely accepted, but keep some euros on hand for transactions at street markets and in smaller shops.
