Scottish sips: 3 pubs in Edinburgh to pop by

When it comes to multi-faceted European cities, Edinburgh is a traveler-favorite. It’s full of history, architecture, beautiful views, and of, course, lively pubs. When you’ve had your fill on castles and medieval churches, here are three pubs to check out for a casual meal, a glass of local beer or whisky, and some live music.

Edinburgh Scotland

When it comes to multi-faceted European cities, Edinburgh is a traveler favorite. It’s full of history, architecture, beautiful views, and of, course, lively pubs. When you’ve had your fill of castles and medieval churches, here are three pubs to check out for a casual meal, a glass of local beer or whisky, and some live music.

1

The Last Drop

Located in the Grassmarket area in the Old Town, this pub is right in the heart of the city, near the Edinburgh Castle and Royal Mile. Beyond great drinks, the menu is small but tasty, including a few surprisingly good vegetarian options. The real draw? The cozy-meets-spooky vibe inside. Hundreds of years ago, the Grassmarket housed the city’s gallows and supposedly the Last Drop is haunted by the spirit of a small girl in medieval clothing.

2

Ensign Ewart

With warm wood beams, lived-in furniture, charming decor, and live music, this picturesque spot is exactly what comes to mind when you think of a traditional Scottish pub. Situated right on the Royal Mile, Ensign Ewart is close to many of the city’s main attractions, and given its location as the highest pub in the city, you’ll get good views of the cityscape on your way in and out. Our recommendation for a mid-day snack? The Scotch eggs!

3

Bow Bar

While Bow Bar does carry high-quality Scotch ales, the big draw here is their whisky. The small, quirky bar offers around 300 varieties of whisky, and the knowledgable and friendly bar staff are happy to help you pick out a good type to sample.
