7 summer drinks from around the world

Jun 17, 2014 by The Go Ahead Tours Team

Traveling during the summer often means high temps and lots of sun. Stay cool (on tour or at home!) with one of these classic summer drinks, perfect for a mid-afternoon refresh.

Pina Colada

1. Piña Coladas in Costa Rica

Some of the world’s best pineapples are grown in Costa Rica, and for piña colada lovers like us, that’s just one more reason why this Latin American country tops our must-visit list. Want to make your own at home? Look no further than our live, interactive piña colada Online Escape! You’ll virtually visit Sarapiqui, Costa Rica, where organic pineapple farmer Maikol will chat with you (live!) about pineapple crops, picking the perfect pineapple in the supermarket—and yes, mixing the best piña colada.

Pimm's Cup

2. Pimm’s Cup in England

Londoners love this quintessentially British cocktail, which is made with gin-based Pimm’s liqueur, cucumber slices, mint, strawberries, and ginger beer or lemon-lime soda (called “lemonade” in Britain). It was first whipped up at a London oyster bar by James Pimm in the 1800’s, and is still the go-to summer drink across the U.K. today.

Peach bellini

3. Bellini in Italy

Ever heard of the famous Harry’s Bar in Venice? That’s where this fruity sip was invented by bartender Giuseppe Cipriani in 1948! Made with peach puree and Prosecco, it’s a fruity cocktail that takes the heat off (even if you’re just serving your own summer brunch on your back porch at home).

Pisco Sour

4. Pisco Sour in Peru

The pisco sour is the national drink of Peru and Chile, and you’ll find it in any restaurant you pop into. To make the drink, Peruvian Pisco (a brandy made from muscat grapes) is shaken with simply syrup, fresh lime juice, and half an egg white to create a refreshingly tart drink. The egg white makes it extra frothy and light, and the beverage is topped with a couple drops of Angostura bitters.

Lassi from India

5. Lassi in India

This yogurt-based beverage is a classic Indian drink. It’s traditionally unsweetened and flavored with spices, but fruitier flavors (like mango) have been popping up in recent years.

Agua Fresca

6. Agua fresca in Mexico

Fruit-flavored water on a hot summer day in Latin America? Talk about brilliant. Agua fresca, which translates to “cool water” or “fresh water,” originated in Mexico, and is water infused with fruit like strawberry, cantaloupe, or watermelon.

Spanish sangria is great for summer

7. Sangria in Spain

Nothing says summer like an ice-cold glass of red wine sangria. A typical recipe includes red wine, orange liqueur like triple sec, and chopped fruit like apples, oranges, and berries. The fruit is mixed in and left to steep overnight, and voilà, the perfect summer drink is ready.
