How a Tour Director can help customize your trip

Nov 02, 2016 by The Go Ahead Tours Team

Go Ahead traveler Molly has explored the world on four different tours, so she knows the value of a Tour Director. On her tour of Croatia, Molly’s Tour Director was particularly helpful, providing a number of great recommendations for the whole group. Here, Molly shares her tips for making the most of your Tour Director’s knowledge to enhance and customize your group tour.

How a Tour Director can customize your trip

1

Find out where the best views are

Listen to all your Tour Director’s recommendations for where to go for the best views, but be sure you ask as well! On our tour of the Balkans, we visited the lovely town of Ston, Croatia. Climbing to the highest point, we were able to observe this beautiful area, including the salt flats. I doubt we would have found that spot on our own.

Pro tip: Your Tour Director will set up time each day to sit down and answer questions if you need help. Even if you are not sure what you are looking for, it’s great to take advantage of this time to get to know your Tour Director and hear their recommendations for other travelers in your group.

2

Follow your Tour Director’s suggestions

If your Tour Director gives you a recommendation for where to eat or drink, go! A real treat was when ours took us to a local oyster bar for the very best, freshest oysters we had ever experienced.

Pro tip: You may not always be with your Tour Director, so they will help you map out how to get to their favorite spots. Take your map with you in case you get lost! Locals are also a great resource for suggestions, or to help you get back on track.

3

Take advantage of the bus rides

Long bus rides are actually great opportunities to ask your Tour Directors questions and learn more about the country. They are always open to any specific requests to see additional sites, and they often provide you with local treats during longer rides! Some Tour Directors will even show movies relevant to the region or play traditional music to add local culture to your ride.

Pro tip: Do your research before the tour. If you find a location of interest that we do not travel to but is nearby, see if it is an option to stop by on a bus transfer or ask your Tour Director how to see it during your free time.

4

Ask your Tour Director for free time recommendations

I usually plan the optional excursions before traveling. However, our Tour Directors have always been very accommodating to anyone who chooses to participate once on tour. If they choose to do their own thing, Tour Directors provide recommendations for local sites to find tasty food and unusual buys.

Pro tip: If you are passionate about a cooking class, museum, town, etc. that you want to experience while you are traveling, your Tour Director can help you! Be sure to bring up your interests ahead of time so they can help you purchase necessary tickets or find the best resource for you.

5

It’s okay to be nervous

Don’t be afraid to ask too many questions; you’re stepping outside your comfort zone when you travel, and your Tour Director will understand that. I have found the Go Ahead Tour Directors to be some of the best I have ever had! They always have constant concern for our happiness and comfort with everything while traveling, and will be there to support you if you need help or assistance at any point on tour.

Pro tip: Ask as many questions as you have! Tour Directors understand the culture and regions you are traveling to. They can provide you with tips and understanding to be sure you are comfortable to get out and explore.
