What to eat in Iceland: The best restaurants in Reykjavik

Jun 25, 2020 by Emily Houston

We knew Iceland was the Land of Fire and Ice and thanks to Tour Director Perla, we now know it’s also the land of ice cream lovers! Join her on the streets of Reykjavik as she gives us the scoop on the city’s top ice cream spot.

Then, bookmark this list of our other favorite restaurants in Reyjavik so you’ll know where to eat on a future tour of Iceland.

Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur

The name of this roadside skyr stand translates to “the best hot dog in town,” so you know it has to be worth the wait. The hot dogs here are made with a mix of lamb, pork, and beef. Icelanders prefer their dogs served with the works: sweet mustard, ketchup, rémoulade, and a mix of raw and friend onions.

Ramen Momo

Iceland may be thousands of miles away from Japan, but the ramen here competes with the best of the best. Just ask staffer Jamie. She dined here while on a tour of Iceland and wrote all about why it’s one of her favorite places.

Grái Kötturinn

This unassuming cafe is the perfect place to escape a cold Icelandic winter day or when you’re in need of a coffee break. The bright reds booths and winding bookshelves add to the cozy, welcoming vibe of the restaurant. Plus, you can never go wrong by enjoying breakfast for lunch. We hear the pancakes are pretty great.

Bar Ananas

Sometimes you need to pair a tropical drink with your Nordic vacation. Bar Ananas serves some the the city’s most inventive cocktails inside a quirky spot just off the main street. Ananas means pineapple in Icelandic and everything from the chandeliers to the paintings on the walls are pineapple-themed. Pop by on the weekends to pair your cocktail with some upbeat tunes played by a local DJ.
