Winter around the world is full of moments that make the season a travel favorite. Whether we’re watching the snowfall from a Parisian café or getting out under the Australian sun, there’s so much to love about this time of year. Below, find some of our favorite reasons to make a winter getaway.
1. See the icons without a crowd
A little snow can make a city magical, and with fewer tourists in Europe’s most sought-after destinations, you’ll get more chances to stop and savor the moment. (Imagine: a less-crowded Louvre, or getting a reservation at London’s best restaurants!) Some of our favorite ways to get out and celebrate winter? Ice skating beside iconic landmarks, like Paris’ l’Hotel de Ville or the Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, and warming up with hearty seasonal dishes.
2. Indulge in a little romance
The City of Love is très romantique year-round, and sweethearts the world over swoon for Tuscany and Venice. As far as romance goes, the classics can’t be beat, but we think even more magical in winter. The snow-dusted banks of the Seine, a cozy gondola ride or a rustic vineyard—any one is the perfect setting for romance.
3. Celebrate the season’s festivals
All over the world, winter is the season for celebration. Experience Carnival in Rome, Florence and Venice—where colorful costumes, lively music and dancing are the order of the day. In Valencia, there’s Las Fallas, a weeklong party punctuated by fireworks and parades with elaborate floats, called ninots. And of course, there’s no better place than Dublin for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Head to the Emerald Isle, and raise a pint with thousands of Dubliners to toast Ireland’s patron saint.
4. Make a sunny escape
Swaying palms, sandy beaches, the sun on our shoulders—we won’t deny, a warm winter escape is definitely dreamy. For a twist on the typical tropical retreat, try an off-the-beaten-path destination. Explore the rainforests of Costa Rica, spot amazing wildlife in the Amazon or head down under on a trip to Australia and New Zealand. While winter’s in full swing up north, in the Southern Hemisphere it’s summertime!
